FAQS - Cosmetic Dentistry

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Anything that we do that improves the look of your teeth is cosmetic. Whilst general dentistry focuses on preventative measures and the treatment of oral diseases, cosmetic dentistry looks at improving your teeth and smile. Teeth whitening and porcelain veneers are classified as cosmetic. On certain occasions implants may be too depending on their use.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to take years off your appearance! Often as we age and indulge in all the fun things in life (coffee, red wine, tea etc.) our teeth discolour and start to look yellow. Teeth whitening is the process of removing stains and discolouration from teeth to produce whiter, more natural looking teeth. We use the Zoom Whitening system – a proven and very effective in chair system. We also offer at home whitening.

How long will the whitening last?

This is dependent on many factors – particularly your lifestyle choices (coffee, red wine etc.) moving forward after treatment. Our dentists will be able to offer you an individual guideline.

Why would I need a crown?

Crowns perform two duties – to repair or to cosmetically enhance. A crown is often the best solution to replace large or worn fillings, to repair a tooth that has cracked, has very large cavities or after a Root Canal treatment. The crown covers and provides increased protection of the natural tooth beneath it. It is also important for keeping your bite aligned so the forces on your teeth are balanced. Crowns are also used to improve the appearance of natural teeth that are malformed, wrongly positioned or discoloured.

What is a crown?

Dental crowns are a bit like a glove for the tooth. They cover and encase the tooth (or teeth) on which they are cemented. Crowns are pretty clever; not only can they rebuild broken or decayed teeth, they improve the cosmetic appeal all while strengthening the teeth! The type of crown we recommend for you will depend on several items. Your treatment plan, position of the tooth and desired outcomes for appearance, chewing function and overall oral health all impact this decision. We use full porcelain crowns (made by our trusty Ceramist in his lab) or full porcelain Cerec crowns made on site at Channon Lawrence Dental. We make crowns using moulds of your teeth. This ensures a perfect fit and natural bite every time.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth, either to improve the aesthetics or to protect the surface from damage.
